SIC code
Also: Standard Industrial Classification
A Standard Industrial Classification code, or SIC code, is the industry code that appears in a company's EDGAR filings. In the SEC's words, "the Standard Industrial Classification Codes that appear in a company's disseminated EDGAR filings indicate the company's type of business." The codes are "also used in the Division of Corporation Finance as a basis for assigning review responsibility for the company's filings," and the SEC publishes the list with the office that reviews each code. CFO Tribune reads each roster company's SIC code from EDGAR and groups the codes into the sectors on its sector pages; the industry name it shows is EDGAR's own description.
